The Long Run

I know the "long run" has been hailed as the bread and butter of marathon training, but it sure can be a pain in the ass to do. Such was my experience yesterday morning. First, I had to regulate the beer consumption Saturday night. We were at the beach for the weekend, so that was really a bummer. Next, ya have to get up EARLY to beat the heat. I was up at 4:30 AM, and running by 4:50.....in the dark, down streets shared with drivers who DID NOT regulate their beer consumption. So I survived Sunday morning NASCAR, only to be greeted by our friend the Sun, at around 6 AM.
Even running slow, read 9 minute miles, it gets hot quick when the Sun shows up. Around 7 AM, I'm having to drink Powerade every 2 miles to keep up with my water losses.
But I got it done. 18 miles for this week's long run. Those last 3 were pretty tough. I'm hoping cooler weather this fall might help make these long ones get easier.

Good job getting that 18-miler in. You'll thank yourself in a couple of months.

Nice job on the hot 18 miler! I too am hoping for the cooler temps come fall. And regulating the beer intake on Saturday is really cramping my style too :)

Nice job on the 18 miles!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. The MCM is a wonderful marathon. Really well organized. The hill at the beginning is a bitch and then there's one smaller one at about mile 6, but then it's nice and flat for the rest (until the end).

I've only run it once, but I've lived in the area for 15+ years, so feel free to hit me up with questions as the race approaches.

Good going with the 18er. My long runs are on Saturdays which really screws up the beer drinking on Friday, but I guess it's worth it. I hope. Your dedication inspires me my friend. Keep it up.
